As annuity rates have plummeted during the downturn, the brunt of the suffering has been felt by mid-earning professionals. People who have had the income to save into pensions on a long-term basis have seen their pots diminished by Bank of England base rate cuts and stock market turbulence. The recent news gets no better: research shows that annuity rates have fallen by over 10% in the last two years. And to make matters worse for middle-class savers, a pensions 'postcode lottery' has seen those living in more affluent areas offered the worst deals

There are many important issues for those approaching retirement including how to protect their pension income from the future effects of inflation. This issue has raised its ugly head again as the UK inflation rate rose to 3.5% in January from 2.9% the month before and this is the steepest annual increase for 14 months.

Investors are being advised not to access their pensions before the age of 55 unless they have no other income, ahead of a change to the rules in the next tax year. Millions of people in their early 50s will have to decide in the next few weeks whether to take their pension benefits early, while they still can. From April 6, the minimum age at which people can access their pension savings will rise from 50 to 55.

In November I wrote about the outlook for annuities and tongue in cheek I said that many people thought annuities were legalised theft. Judging by the comments I obviously hit a raw nerve. so in an attempt to convince people that annuities are not legalised theft I developed a special annuity calculator called "Beat the Annuity"
